Academic Board

In order to maintain academic integrity, adhere to strategic aims and uphold standards, TMC has set up structures to monitor and review academic processes and developments as well as to implement reform. This includes an Academic Board and an Examination Board, plus standing and ad hoc committees tasked with curriculum design and development, library administration, course and assessment review, ISO maintenance and assessment appeal.

The Academic Board will meet at regularly scheduled intervals to discuss and implement any issues brought to its attention. It comprises the following members:

  • PROFESSOR CHEN SWEE ENG

    Professor Chen was appointed to the TMC Academic Advisory Board in 2005. In 2010, he was appointed as an External Member and the Chair of the TMC Academic Board. Professor Chen is currently the Chair, Building and Property, Academic Director, Higher Education, of Holmesglen Institute. He was previously the Professor for Building and the Director of the Centre for Infrastructure and Property in the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle. He was a Colombo Plan Scholar and studied architecture in Australia. After several years of practice in Singapore and Australia as an architect and project manager, he started his academic career with the University of Newcastle and was appointed to the Chair of Building in 1999. Professor Chen is a leading academic and researcher in the built environment field. He has published over 160 books, journal and conference papers and reports. In 2004, he was nominated by the Australian Research Council’s College of Experts as an expert of international standing. Professor Chen is also regarded as an international expert in innovative curriculum design, particularly using problem-based learning. He has been responsible for the design of a number of innovative programs in construction management and property, including the multi-award winning construction management program at the University of Newcastle. He has been invited as a keynote speaker to many international conferences in education and has been an educational consultant and adviser to institutions in countries including Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. He is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building and an Honorary Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Engineering Technologists.

    Emeritus Professor Ng has served on the Academic Boards of La Trobe University and Monash University, both in Melbourne, Australia. He was the Chair of several committees within La Trobe University including the Academic Progress Committee and the School Research Committee within the School of Behavioral Sciences. He was also the Chairperson of the School of Psychology at Monash University for six years. He has published over 200 books, journals and conference reports. In 2009, Emeritus Professor Ng was appointed to the TMC School of Psychology Advisory and Planning Board as its Deputy Chair and in 2010, he was appointed as the Alternate Chair of the TMC Academic Board.
  • DR LAU TEIK SOON was appointed as a Director of TMC Education Corporation Ltd on 16 June 2006 and last re-elected on 28 April 2008. An Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore, Dr Lau has been in private practice since 1998 and is currently the sole proprietor of Lau TS & Associates. Dr Lau practises in the areas of civil and criminal litigation, family law, wills and probate, and arbitration. His academic credentials include a Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations from Australian National University, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) First Class from the University of Singapore and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) Second Class Lower from the University of London. In addition, he possesses a Postgraduate Diploma in Criminal Justice from the University of Leicester and a Professional Certificate in Arbitration from the University of Adelaide. Dr Lau is also an Independent Director of Hock Lian Seng Holdings Ltd and Ryobi Kiso Holdings Ltd.
  • DR CHIN KON YUEN (Honorary), one of the founders of TMC Education Corporation Ltd, has played a pivotal role in planning and charting the development of the Group since its inception in 1981. Presently serving as the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, he is instrumental in putting forth and implementing the Group’s policies on business growth and engaging in high level collaboration with potential business partners on matters of business development, franchising and overseas expansion. Dr Chin completed his tertiary education in Marketing from the Institute of Marketing, UK, and attained his tertiary qualification in Management Studies which was jointly awarded by the University of Chicago, US, and Singapore National Productivity Board. In 1994, he was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology by Staffordshire University, UK, for his contribution in creating education opportunities for young people in Singapore to gain professional computing qualifications from Diploma level to Master Degree. Dr Chin is also the President of Singapore Education International (SEI), an association formed by private education providers, with the support of IE Singapore, to promote the Singapore education brand overseas.
  • DR HA THI THU HUONG started her career with TMC in 1998 as a Business Lecturer. Over the past years, Dr Ha was promoted from Lecturer to Subject Leader, Senior Lecturer to Assistant Course Director, and subsequently Deputy Course Director to Dean and then to Dean / Director of Research & Development. Dr Ha oversees the Business School and is also the Chief Editor of TMC Academic Journal, a double-blind peer-reviewed journal with an ISNN and registered with the National Library Board of Singapore. Dr Ha has many years of working experience in manufacturing, marketing research and business consultancy/development and teaching in tertiary institutions/universities in Australia, Singapore and Vietnam. Her research interests include public policy, governance, education and e-consumer protection. Her research activities have resulted in a research grant by Consumer Affairs Victoria, Government of Victoria State (Australia), a Distinguished Paper Award (USA/Turkey), many international travel grants, refereed journal articles, book chapters and encyclopaedia articles published by well-known publishers such as McMillan, Pal Grave, ABC-Publishers, Kluwer Academic Journal, etc. and several conference papers. She has also been invited to review many academic journals and conference articles. Dr Ha holds a PhD in Management from Monash University, Australia, a Master in Public Policy from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, a Postgraduate Certificate (PRE-MBA) and others. She was a recipient of PhD Scholarship awarded by Monash University, Temasek Scholarship (for young potential ASEAN leaders) awarded by National University of Singapore, and a scholarship awarded by United Nations University (UNU), International Leadership Academy (ILA), to attend the First International Leadership Programme by UNU/ILA, and many other professional and academic awards.
  • MR KASHMIR SINGH joined TMC in 2007 as a Senior Lecturer in its Business School. He is responsible for teaching Accounting & Finance subjects for the proprietary and Degree programmes. Prior to joining TMC, Mr. Singh has over 30 years of teaching / supervision experience having worked for three other private education institutions in different roles including teaching, setting up an Accounting Faculty for one and helping to run the operations for the other two. Mr. Singh has also carried out in-house training on topics such as understanding and interpreting of financial statement for non-accounting managers. Before that, Mr. Singh has 8 years of experience in the accounting field as a head of the Accounting Department in an International Company, handling a full set of accounts. Mr. Singh graduated with a MBA from Clayton University (USA) in 1999.
