Course Introduction

If you’re looking for an exciting, innovative, practically-based degree in business, this programme is for you. The Business and Management degree is designed for students with existing business or management qualification to continue their studies to degree level.  It provides graduates with the managerial skills and knowledge required by companies.  The degree focuses on business and management from a strategic perspective. 

The degree aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of a range of topics including: organisational decision making; drivers for change; the global business environment; use of financial tools for decision making; and emergent business and management issues. 

It includes the development of specific practical and professional skills, such as the use IT, using and integrating a range of vocational management skills and knowledge to solving organisational problems and issues, using appropriate management tools to the evaluation of strategic options.

The degree consists of a total of 6 modules

  • Business Strategy
    This module builds on students’ existing knowledge of management theory and practice and integrates different functional aspects of business in order to provide the students with a holistic perspective of how organisations determine their strategic direction. It examines the strategic management process, strategic analysis of the external and internal environment, mission and objectives, competitive advantage, growth direction and methods, evaluation of strategic options and organisational aspects.

  • Strategic Financial Management
    This module aims to provide students with a working understanding and appreciation of financial markets, the sources of finance and the cost of capital, capital investment appraisal and valuation of shares and companies. It examines: financial markets; risk and project appraisal; portfolio theory and capital asset pricing model; sources of capital; cost of capital; value based management; valuation of shares and companies; capital structure; and dividend policy.

  • Strategic Management of Human Resources
    SHRM sets HRM clearly within the context of the strategy of the organisation and evaluates the contribution that HRM may make to organisational effectiveness. It considers how key HRM techniques can contribute to the delivery of strategic business objectives. It provides a challenging and thoughtful perspective towards HR and its effectiveness.

  • International Marketing
    This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of international marketing. It will enable students to analyse and evaluate the characteristics of international markets and understand how to develop appropriate marketing decisions and strategies in a potentially complex and multi-cultural situation. It includes: international marketing environment, marketing intelligence, consumer behaviour, selection and entry methods, marketing mix, planning and strategy, and management systems.

  • New Business Development
    This module examines the new product development process, including assessing market potential using product positioning, testing, test marketing and NPD launch. The assessment consists of the development of a sector specific business plan, which allows students to integrate learning and draws upon many concepts of management.

  • Strategic Global Operations
    This module examines how organisations strategically manage their operations in a global environment. It provides an understanding of operations management in global organisations including: the drivers for effective globalisation; frameworks for analysis; drivers of operations strategy.
