This degree is offered under the LJMU Summer Semester Programme which offers students a unique opportunity to complete their degree by studying the final semester in LJMU.  LJMU has been ranked number one for tourism, leisure and hospitality by the Times Good University Guide.

This degree helps equip students with the knowledge and skills required to make the most of the opportunities on offer in the Hospitality and Tourism industry.

It is designed to build upon existing skills and knowledge, drawing upon the expertise of the staff at TMC and LJMU in areas such as event management, sustainable tourism and urban tourism. 

The degree consists of a total of 7 modules:

At TMC:

Strategic Issues in Hospitality and Tourism

An in-depth examination of current strategic issues in tourism and hospitality industry. This includes the globalization of competition, tourism trends, strategies used by business, environmental impacts etc. Investigation of future trends in a strategic context, the use of strategic analysis to develop strategic options in the face of changes in both the micro and macroeconomic environments. This module builds on previous course knowledge, allowing students to explore areas of interest and is assessed by means of an individual report and presentation.

Destination Marketing

Equips students with an understanding of destination marketing, in order that they are capable of designing and recommending marketing strategies for the promotion tourism in a variety of different locations. Lectures will adopt both a theoretical and practical approach, involving group discussion, case studies and problem solving to develop students practical skills in the application of destination marketing theory. The module will be assessed by means of a written report which provides an opportunity for the student to demonstrate their knowledge of the theory and techniques, and their ability to apply their understanding these to the marketing challenges faced by a particular, specified destination.

International Resort Management

Focuses on the current, up-to-date issues that impact on modern management practices within the industry, critically evaluate contemporary issues. Students gain ability to express qualified opinions on many of the issues facing international resort management. Integrates the theoretical concepts and applied management tools learnt in previous modules and applies these in a strategic planning and management approach across a range of diverse products and services such as mixed use resorts, casinos and emerging developments. Issues such as quality, customer service and culture will also be addressed. A range of different resort types will be used throughout the module. This module is assessed by means of an individual report and presentation.

At LJMU:

Individual Research Study in Tourism, Leisure and Hospitality

This is an independent research project allowing students to specialise in a field related to their career aspirations. Examines an aspect of tourism, leisure or hospitality in detail as directed b the individual student, with guidance from the LJMU lecturers. Supervised and supported by regular tutorials.

Assessment: 100% Coursework

Event Management and Development

A module that examines the fundamental components of event management, providing a critical insight into the event management process. Through the study of this module student will be able to identify differing factors which impact on the event process. Students will develop skills and knowledge of the event management process.

Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality

This module develops a critical understanding of both the impacts of tourism and hospitality, and tourism/hospitality practices aimed at developing more ethical and sustainable forms of tourism. Through a critical examination of the agents and stakeholders of tourism, best practice in sustainable and ethical tourism will be identified.

Urban Tourism, Hospitality and Culture

This module enables students to develop a critical understanding of urban tourism and the role that hospitality, heritage and the culture industries play in the urban tourism process. Students will gain a critical understanding of the relationship between leisure and tourism and post-industrial economies, urban development and regeneration in hospitality. Additionally students will be exposed to a number of differing perspectives on heritage, and the representation of the past.

Structure

Delivery

This programme is delivered in Singapore and the UK through LJMU’s summer semester programme. Students will undergo 14 weeks at TMC Academy and another 14 weeks in LJMU. Students will have access to local lecturers and the on-line resources provided by TMC and LJMU.

There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.

Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by means of examination and /or coursework.

  • 4.5 months at TMC
  • 3.5 months at LJMU

Intakes

Diploma and Higher Diploma Intakes in:
  • January
  • April
  • July
  • October
The advanced diploma commences in February with students transferring to LJMU at the beginning of June.

Entry Requirements

  • TMC Higher Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management
  • Relevant Polytechnic Diplomas
  • Other Qualifications equivalent to a UK Higher National Diploma

Progression

Graduation Requirement

In order to be awarded the Honours Degree, a student must normally

  • obtain at least a pass in all the modules in TMC Advanced Diploma and LJMU on-campus modules.
