Diploma Part 1

MCD1010 Accounting For Business
Financial information is used by a wide variety of industries and individuals as part of the decision-making process in business. This unit will cover some of the theories and practices of accounting and the way in which they relate to financial reporting. The main aim of the unit is to provide learners with the broad principles underlying the recording and reporting of financial information, with the major emphasis on the recording, summarizing and classifying functions of accounting information.

Assessment: 60% Exam/ 40% assessment

MCD1020 Introduction to Management
Organisations today operate in a complex, dynamic and increasingly global environment. This unit is designed to provide students with an overview of the basic concepts and theories in management and a foundation for further management studies. The development of skills in written and oral communication for further business course studies will be encouraged and emphasised.

Assessment: 60% exam/ 40% coursework

MCD1090 Introduction to Marketing
Businesses today operate in an ever-changing environment. This unit is designed to introduce students to the marketing concept. Students will develop an understanding of marketing’s role in an organisation as well as the core components of marketing. The aim of the unit is to provide a foundation to the students to pursue further study in marketing.

Assessment: 50% exams/ 50% assignments

MCD1110 Data Analysis
Data Analysis has been designed to extend and build upon, both in depth and breadth, the mathematical studies undertaken in MCD1550 or equivalent. Further this subject will provide the knowledge and skills to apply statistical techniques to a variety of business applications and decisions. In overall this unit is designed for learners undertaking a business course at tertiary level.

Assessment: 60% exam/ 40% assignments

MCD1380 Introductory Law
The aim of this unit is to provide a basic knowledge of the Australian legal system, an understanding of some key private laws, an introduction to the law of agency and an overview of business organisations.On completion of this unit, students will be able to understand the components of the Australian legal system, the roles played by the courts, the importance of precedent and the rules of statutory interpretation, understanding of law of negligence and contracts amongst other legal terms.

Assessment: 60% exams/ 40% assignments

MCD1540 Intercultural Business Communication
The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the concept of culture and its impact on international business leadership and management. The impact of culture on concepts of leadership, values, expectations and patterns of communication will be examined, both to demonstrate the importance of cultural sensitivity in global management and to assist students in developing their own strategies for effectively communicating and negotiating with individuals from other cultures. Students will learn effective ways to research specific cultures and communications styles in order to prepare themselves for cross-cultural encounters. Through the use of case studies and role-playing simulations, students will have an opportunity to apply their understanding of cultural and ethical issues to realistic business situations.

Assessment: 60% exam/ 40 assignments

MCD1550 Introductory Mathematics for Business
The aim of this unit is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to define and explain key terms and concepts in the areas of Graphs and Relations, Business-related mathematics and Matrices, and to enable students to use this knowledge to apply related mathematical procedures to solve routine application problems.

Assessment: 60% exam/ 40% tests

MCD1690 Introductory Economics
The purpose of this unit is to identify and explain the basic concepts of GDP, business cycles, inflation, unemployment, supply, demand and markets, thereby acquainting students with the basic vocabulary of economics. The roles played by the government, consumers, producers and the perfectly competitive market structures will be explained. A particular emphasis in this unit is to provide students with an introduction of basic issues of both introductory micro and macro economics.

When students have completed this unit, they are expected to be able to:

  • define Economics and describe Production possibility curve
  • describe the determinants of demand and supply
  • explain government policies to combat inflation and unemployment
  • explain the concepts of costs and revenues in the case of a single firm
  • describe the operation of perfectly competitive market.

Diploma Part 2

MCD2010 - Accounting 1
This unit is an introduction to basic concepts in accounting and the application of these concepts for decision-making by a wide range of potential users (e.g., shareholders, investment analysts, lenders, managers etc.). This unit should benefit students who wish to specialise in accounting, and will also be of value to students whose primary interest lies elsewhere in the field of business. On completion, students should have a clear understanding of the accounting process and the language of accounting to enable communication with an accounting professional, understand the relevance of accounting information for informed decision-making by a wide range of potential users, and have the ability to analyse and interpret accounting information.

Assessment: Assignment, Participation & Presentation, Class Test : 40%, Examination : 60%

MCD2020 - Microeconomics
Economics is the study of humans in ‘the ordinary business of life’. This unit introduces students to the ‘economic way of thinking’, which recognises that people must make trade-offs which involve costs between competing alternative uses of scarce resources. This basic economic problem has implications at the microeconomic level. Microeconomic models are used to analyse decision making by individual consumers and firms within various market structures. Welfare and efficiency implications for society are examined and used to analyse domestic and international policy decisions of governments.

Assessment: Assignments & Test : 50%, Examination : 50%

MCD2030 - Managerial Communication
This unit is designed to develop students’ awareness of communication issues within organisational settings and their own capacity as professionals to communicate effectively. The unit emphasises the importance of effective communication both oral and written, introduces models of communication and focuses on communication as process and transaction. Overall, the unit is designed to provide students with opportunities to explore ways in which intrapersonal, interpersonal, group and organisational communication are experienced within organisations.

Assessment: Oral Presentation, Assignment : 60%, Examination : 40%

MCD2040 - Management 1
This is a core unit in the Monash College Diploma of Business Part 2. On completion of this unit students should have an understanding of the nature of managerial work in organisations, theories of management and their historical development, contemporary issues and practices relating to managing people and organisations and key factors in the organisation's environment that impact on how managers and organisations work.

Assessment: Assignments & Tutorials : 50%, Examination : 50%

MCD2050 – Marketing 1
This unit introduces students to the broad discipline of marketing. It encompasses marketing's role in a dynamic business environment and introduces students to the concepts and strategies employed by marketers in facing the challenges presented by the ever-changing world of business. The aim of the unit is to provide students with the conceptual skills necessary to identify and solve marketing problems. The unit provides a foundation for those students seeking to pursue further study in marketing; however it covers the broad scope of marketing for those students undertaking only one marketing unit.

Assessment: Assignments & Casebook : 50%, Examination : 50%

MCD2060 – Accounting 2
MCD2060 (equivalent to AFW1002) is the second unit in accounting offered within the BBusCom at Monash University’s Berwick, Gippsland, Peninsula, Sunway, South African campuses and at Monash College. This unit will cover various aspects of financial accounting and builds on the principles introduced in MCD2010 (equivalent to AFW1000). Aspects associated with transaction reporting and the preparation of financial statements investigated include: the recording of inventory in a retail context, the use ofcontrol accounts, the role of specialised journals, a rangeof balance day-adjustments, reversing entries and account reconstruction. The unit also focus on internal control procedures and computerised accounting. The definition, recognition and disclosure criteria of financial statement elements are explored as well as the cost and fair value measurement ofvarious financial statement elements.

MCD2070 - Business Law
MCD2070 Business Law is an introductory unit which seeks to develop an understanding of the legal rights and responsibilities of business in the key areas of contracts and torts, and also to develop an understanding of the different business structures and the consequences of that structure for owners and managers of the business. This unit also provides background material and skills for more advanced studies in areas related to business law in later units.

Assessment: Assignment : 30%; Examination : 70%.

MCD2080 Business Statistics
MCD2080 is equivalent to ETW1102, the core statistics unit in the B.Bus.Com. degree. It is also a prerequisite for a number of second and third level units in data analysis that are available in the degree program.

What is statistics, and why is the study of statistics required in a business degree? The information technology revolution has led to overwhelming availability of data and information. Businesses and other organisations that make good use of the available data are at an advantage, and therefore data analysis skills are sought after. Data collection and analysis techniques are collectively called statistics. Experts in statistics play an important role in modern business. In addition, everyone in a business-related job needs to be able to understand statistical discussion of issues, and most need to be able to use descriptive statistics in reports and presentations.

This introductory unit will enable you to perform basic analysis of raw data, and present your findings. You will also learn to critically evaluate data analysis presented to you.

MCD2090 Macroeconomics
Economics is the study of humans in ‘the ordinary business of life’. MCD2130 Functions & Their Applications
MCD2130 is equivalent to MTH1010. The focus of this unit will be on the behavior of functions and examining some of their applications to the real world. The way that functions will be introduced is by individually describing the characteristics of families of different function types (linear, polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric). The composition of functions through possible combination of different types of component functions will also be investigated. Other operations on functions such as transformations via shifting, scaling and reflection will be presented, along with the existence and meaning of inverse functions.

Assessment: Class Quiz & Assignment : 40%; Examination : 60%

Structure

Delivery

This programme is wholly delivered in Singapore. Students will have access to local lecturers and the on-line resources provided by TMC.

There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.

Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by means of examination and /or coursework.

Entry Requirements

To enter the Diploma of Business (Business and Commerce streams) students must meet age, academic and English language proficiency requirements.

These requirements will vary depending on whether you enter the Diploma Part 1 or Diploma Part 2 program.

Diploma Part 1

Age:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age when you first enrol.

Academic Qualification:

  • GCE 'O' levels (or equivalent).

Admission requirements:

  • A maximum of 23 points in best 5 academic subjects.

Prerequisite subject:

  • C grade in 'O' Level Mathematics.

English:

  • C grade in 'O' Level English or
  • IELTS 5.5 (no band lower than 5.0) or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 527, TWE 4 , or 
  • TOEFL iBT (internet- based)

Diploma Part 2

Age:

  • You must be at least 17 years of age when you first enrol.

Academic Qualification:

  • GCE 'A' levels (or equivalent).

Admission requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 points (A =10, B=8, C=6, D=4,E=2)
    (minimum 2, maximum 3 'A' Level subjects).

Prerequisite subject:

  • 'A' Level Mathematics (or 'O' Level Mathematics)*

English:

  • C grade in 'A' Level English or
  • IETLS 6.0 (writing 6.0) or
  • TOEFL (paper based) 580, TWE 4.5 , or
  • TOEFL iBT (internet- based)
