The Diploma in Mass Communications provides students with an introduction to mass communications.  The Diploma includes up-to-date topics and hands-on experience in areas such as multimedia, website development, animation and the use of the latest commercial software in producing business documents and publishing, including Adobe InDesign. This course also aims to help students meet the challenges of careers in the media and other related industries.

The Diploma also provides an ideal stepping-stone for students who wish to further their education and are aiming towards a degree in Mass Communications.

Cambridge International Examinations validate the programme, providing quality assurance for the course structure, content, and assessment; this organisation moderates the setting and marking of all the coursework.

The Diploma consists of a total of 6 modules:

Business Communication

Business Communication is increasingly becoming an important aspect of a business organisation today. The need to communicate effectively has already become more of a necessity rather than a choice for almost any type of business. It explores the implications of effective communication for business environments and examines by a series of questions related to businesses. This module introduces the student to the increasing need to improve communication in business. It explores what the implications of effective communication is for the business environment and is examined by a series questions related to businesses. This module enables students to improve their skills in interpersonal communication; such as in oral and written communication. It also enables individuals to review and understand their own behaviour and performance, with a view to improve their future learning abilities. It provides a good foundation for individuals to acknowledge their own strength and weaknesses in communication.

Introduction to Mass Communication

This module is a stepping-stone to a complex study of communications. It covers various means by which individuals and entities relay information to large segments of the population all at once through specialised communication media. The topics covered are designed to help students familiarise with the uses and effects of the various communication modes, whether their goal is to be a future practicing professional in a media enterprise or a responsible consumer of mass communication in society.

Internet and Multimedia

The purpose of this module is to enable students to gain essential knowledge on Internet technologies, as well as effective multimedia design techniques. With the appropriate software, students will get hands-on experience in developing web-site and animation using multimedia blocks. The module aims to enable students to use key Internet technologies, such as web browsers, e-mail, newsgroups, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Telnet, and search engines. Students would also be able to create simple web-pages containing text, graphics, hyperlinks, tables and forms. Students will be able to comprehend the basic concepts of multimedia and develop simple multimedia applications such as creating simple animation.

Editing and Desktop Publishing

This module aims to familiarize the students on theoretical and practical knowledge of developing professional-looking desktop publishing materials both for business and personal use. This is a hands-on module that allows the students to learn the latest software in desktop publishing. Students will be able to layout magazines, newsletters and newspapers, understand and undertake basic publishing and editing for a variety of print media.

Fundamentals of Marketing

This module deals with basic concepts of marketing and also introduces the students to marketing strategy and methods. This module stresses gaining the required marketing knowledge and skills that would form the foundation to build on advanced marketing-based units at higher level. It also provides scope for application of marketing strategy and methods through case discussion. This module enables the individual to improve their understanding of the basic marketing concepts. Developing an understanding of how marketing functions, the role of the marketing mix in marketing strategy, the impact of environmental factors and the need for market research will provide a strong foundation for both work and further studies.

Introduction to IT

The purpose of this module is to develop the competency of the students in the use of the Microsoft Windows operating system and some common business software packages such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. This module enables students to improve his/her IT skills. Students are expected to be able to understand basic computer systems and the use of industry standard software. It provides a good foundation for the individual to develop the necessary knowledge and skills required for both academic and business material and presentations.

Structure

Delivery

This programme is wholly delivered in Singapore. Students will have access to local lecturers and the on-line resources provided by TMC.

There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.

Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by means of examination and /or coursework.

Entry Requirements

Local

Age: 16 years old (based on date of birth) at point of start class

Academic Qualification:

  • 3 GCE 'O' passes
  • Certificate Level
  • NITEC
  • Pass TMC Psychometric Test (if student does not meet any of the above academic qualifications)

English Proficiency:

  • GCE 'O' English
    - IT and Gaming programmes require D7
    - Other programmes require C6
  • Pass interview with the academic HOD/designate or Student Recruitment and Marketing HOD/designate (if student does not meet the above English requirement)
Mature Candidates: 21 years of age (based on date of birth) will be considered on case-by-case basis


International

Age: 16 years old (based on date of birth) at point of start class

Academic Qualification:

 

Student has to pass all subjects with the required averaged score as below:

  • Indonesia: Year 11 with an average 65%
  • Sri Lanka: Year 10 Pass
  • India: Year 10 Pass
  • Vietnam: Year 11 with an average 65%
  • Myanmar: Year 11 Pass
  • China: Year 11 with an average 65%
  • Others: Year 11 with an average 65%
  • Pass TMC Psychometric Test (if student meet the above qualification (year of study) but not the average score)

English Proficiency:

 

 

  • IELTS 5.0/TOEFL 500
  • Other equivalent qualifications where the medium of instruction is English
  • Pass TMC English Placement Test at the equivalent of Intermediate level
  • Attend Hawthorn English classes and pass at the equivalent of Intermediate level (if student does not meet any of the above English requirements)

Graduation Requirement

In order to be awarded the Diploma, a student must normally
  • obtain at least a pass in all the modules within the eligibility period
  • must meet the minimum course attendance requirement
