The Hospitality industry is experiencing a boom not only in Singapore, but across the region and in countries as far afield as the US, Australia and the UK. This course builds on your existing experience and qualifications in hospitality, and provides the subject knowledge and skills development to enable you to become a successful hospitality manager. The degree consists of a total of 6 modules: Business Strategy This module builds on students’ existing knowledge of management theory and practice and integrates different functional aspects of business in order to provide the students with a holistic perspective of how organisations determine their strategic direction. It examines the strategic management process, strategic analysis of the external and internal environment, mission and objectives, competitive advantage, growth direction and methods, evaluation of strategic options and organisational aspects. Assessment: 50% Exam/50% Coursework Strategic Financial Management This module aims to provide students with a working understanding and appreciation of financial markets, the sources of finance and the cost of capital, capital investment appraisal and valuation of shares and companies. It examines: financial markets; risk and project appraisal; portfolio theory and capital asset pricing model; sources of capital; cost of capital; value based management; valuation of shares and companies; capital structure; and dividend policy. Assessment: 100% Exam Strategic Management of Human Resource SHRM sets HRM clearly within the context of the strategy of the organisation and evaluates the contribution that HRM may make to organisational effectiveness. It considers how key HRM techniques can contribute to the delivery of strategic business objectives. It provides a challenging and thoughtful perspective towards HR and its effectiveness. Assessment: 100% Coursework International Hospitality and Tourism Marketing This module aims to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of international hospitality and tourism marketing. It will enable students to analyse and evaluate the characteristics of international markets in these sectors, and understand how to develop appropriate marketing decisions and strategies in a potentially complex and multi-cultural situation. Assessment: 100% Exam New Business Development This module examines the new product development process. Including assessing market potential using product positioning, testing, test marketing and NPD launch. The assessment consists of the development of a sector specific business plan, which allows students to integrate learning and draws upon many concepts of management. Assessment: 100% Coursework Managing International Hospitality This module provides an analysis of the International Hospitality sector across a diverse range of products and services highlighting management challenges. Major product and operational and service concept developments in the sector are considered along with their implications for hospitality operators. It examines how hospitality organisations can strategically manage their business in a competitive global environment. Assessment: 100% Coursework An important feature to note is that the programme provides a route for Polytechnic Diploma holders with the following (or related) diplomas to obtain a world-class degree in 12 to 18 months. Structure
Delivery
This programme is wholly delivered in Singapore. Students will have access to local lecturers and the on-line resources provided by TMC.
There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.
Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.
Assessment
Modules are assessed by means of examination and /or coursework.
