Do you want to develop your ability to solve problems and deal effectively with business issues? If so, our Business and Management degree may be just what you’re looking for.

The Business and Management degree is designed to build on your existing business or management qualification and help you gain a solid understanding of the complexities involved in business and management, as well as the necessary skills to become an effective manager.

The degree will develop your knowledge and understanding of a range of key functional areas of businesses such as marketing, human resource management, finance and operations management.. You will develop your skills in organisational decision making in the global business environment; the use of financial tools for decision making; and solving business and management issues using appropriate management tools.

The degree offers of a total of 7 modules:

Business Strategy (Compulsory)

The module builds on the students’ knowledge of management theory and practice gained from prior study of business and management and integrates different functional aspects of business in order to provide the student with a holistic perspective of how organisations determine their strategic direction. The module examines the strategic decision-making process through an investigation of the external and internal environment, strategic options and implementation issues facing an organisation. It will cover challenges facing business in the 21st century ranging from globalisation and the rise of the emerging economies, governance and corporate social responsibility and sustainability.

Assessment: 50% Exam/50% Coursework

Financial Management (Compulsory)

This module is designed for those who wish to develop their study of financial management as part either of a degree in accounting and finance or, alternatively, a more general management degree. It aims to provide students with a working understanding and appreciation of financial markets, the sources of finance and the cost of capital, capital investment appraisal, and valuation of shares and companies. It aims to facilitate the acquisition by students of a balance of skills and knowledge including skills in applying quantitative techniques; the ability to interpret and explain the results of these calculations; the ability to critically evaluate the techniques; and the capacity to relate these to the external contexts in which companies operate.

Strategic Management of Human Resources (Elective)

Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) sets HRM clearly within the context of the strategy of the organisation and evaluates the contribution that HRM may make to organisational effectiveness. It considers how key HRM techniques can contribute to the delivery of strategic business objectives. The module will examine a challenging and thoughtful perspective towards HR and its effectiveness through five themes: SHRM concepts, Approaches, Techniques for performance, HR Effectiveness and HR in the International Context.

Assessment: 100% Coursework

International Marketing (Elective)

This module aims to develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of international marketing. It will enable students to analyse and evaluate the characteristics of international markets and understand how to develop appropriate marketing decisions and strategies in a potentially complex and multi-cultural situation. The module starts with approaches to analysing the international environment before utilising this knowledge in the development of international marketing decisions, strategies and organisation.

Assessment: 60% Exam/40% Coursework

Strategic Global Operations (Elective)

This module examines how organisations strategically manage their operations in a global environment. It provides an understanding of operations management in global organisations: drivers for effective globalisation, frameworks for analysis of operations management, drivers of operations strategy in a global marketplace, functional integration in the delivery of operations strategy and; operations strategy and its implementation in a variety of global organisations and sectors.

Assessment: 100% Coursework

New Business Development (Compulsory)

This module will examine: the new product development process (NPD) including concept/idea generation, market research and evaluation methods and the commercialisation process. Methods to assess the market potential for new products including product positioning, testing, test marketing, and NPD launch are studied. The assessment consists of the development of a sector specific business plan, which allows students to integrate learning and to draw upon many concepts of management. New Business Development addresses all aspects of new business planning - new product development, finance, marketing and operations.

Managing Your Professional Performance (Compulsory)

This module gives you the opportunity to take an in-depth look at yourself in the context of academic learning and to develop and implement your own development plan. The module will examine your own knowledge, attitude and behaviours in order to effectively manage yourself and others, explore self worth and positive regard, review leadership styles and self-leadership, explore the characteristics and attitudes of achievement – motivated people, find ways of managing your own learning and development and measure the impact of your development on team performance, and develop a range of information skills for independent research based on the internet.

Structure

Delivery

This programme is wholly delivered in Singapore. Students will have access to local lecturers and the on-line resources provided by TMC.

There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.

Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by means of examination and /or coursework.

In order to obtain the Degree, student must normally obtain at least a pass in all the units within the eligibility period.
