The degree consists of a total of 7 modules:

Managing Changes and Challenges in Tourism

The aims of this module are to enable students to analyse and evaluate the dynamic nature of the international tourism industry. Successful students will typically be able to: evaluate potential solutions to tourism development and operational problems; think critically about changes and challenges in the tourism industry; research independently using a variety of sources to extract appropriate material for use in assessed work; use and synthesise information appropriate to solving case study issues; communicate effectively in written assignments and seminar sessions; improve research skills and work as part of a team towards conducting a seminar session.

Assessment: 40% Exams/60% Coursework

Business Strategy

Develop an appreciation of the problems involved in developing strategies and plans, and implementing them. Develop research, diagnostic and analytical ability using a variety of concepts, analytical tools. The module includes a comprehensive review of current strategic issues identifying the contradictions and paradoxical nature of strategic decision making and strategic planning.

Assessment: 70% Exams/30% Coursework

Festivals and Events

The aims of this module are to enable students to identify and understand development, operation, and management of short-term tourist events. Successful students will be able to: explain and assess the elements which are involved in developing and managing short term tourist events; describe the significance of these events in international tourism; identify and examine specific festivals and events to better understand the tourist experience and management implications.

Assessment: 50% Exam and 50% Coursework

Tourism Destination Planning

The aims of this module are to provide an understanding of destination management systems, the theories of tourism planning and development, the influences of governments, investors and tour operators in the development and management of destinations at various stages of development life cycle. Successful students will be able to: examine the major influences that have shaped the early development of tourist destinations; analyse the complex nature and influences of planning within tourism destinations; evaluate policies and planning strategies for tourism regeneration; evaluate the interaction between governments and developers at the various stages of destination development.

Assessment: 50% Exams/50% Coursework

Tourism Management of Natural & Cultural Heritage Sites

The aims of this module are to enable students to highlight the diversity of natural and cultural visitor attractions and to consider the factors which determine the success of those attractions through providing an insight into the practical visitor management. Successful students will be able to: introduce and analyse the range and diversity of international tourist attractions; examine the approaches to visitor management and tourism management techniques; understand the factors which determine the success of an attraction; critically assess the importance of 'good' management of natural and cultural heritage sites.

Assessment: 50% Exams/50% Coursework

Global Marketing, Ethics and Culture

The aims of this module are to enable students to develop a sound theoretical and practical understanding of global marketing, intercultural environment, ethics and values, and apply these theories and practices. Successful students will have knowledge and understanding of: the changing nature of the global trading environment, major strategic and contextual trends which affect global strategic decision-making; the different social and cultural conventions which effect buying behaviour and marketing approaches; the methodologies for global marketing research and a range of sources of data/information and tools of analysis necessary to support a global marketing strategy.

Assessment: 60% Exams/40% Coursework

Coastal Resort Development

The aims of this module are to enable students to explore theories of development in relation to coastal resorts; understand the socio-economic and historical influences of resorts; analyse the influence of governments, investors and tour operators in the development and management of coastal resorts at the various stages of development. Successful students will have a knowledge and understanding of: the major influences that have shaped the early development of coastal resorts; the complex nature of decline and be able to evaluate strategies for regeneration of resorts; resort tourism and the different typology of resort areas; the interaction between governments and developers at the various stages of development.

Assessment: 60% Exams/40% Coursework

Structure

Delivery

This programme is wholly delivered in Singapore. Students will have access to local lecturers and the on-line resources provided by TMC.

There will be a combination of lectures, tutorials, seminars, presentations and sessions in computer laboratories where appropriate. Students will also be given additional work to complete outside of scheduled classes.

Resources and materials provided for students will include lecture notes and references for further reading in books, professional journals, publication, articles and websites.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by means of examination and /or coursework.

In order to be awarded the Honours Degree, a student must normally

  • obtain at least a pass in all the modules within the eligibility period
